ABU DHABI ART, 2023

Galerie ISA is delighted to participate in the 2023 edition of Abu Dhabi Art. On display are works by Maha Ahmed, Diana Al-Hadid, Louise Despont, Idris Khan, Anoushka Mirchandani, Annie Morris, and Emilie Pugh. Keeping in line with Galerie ISA’s global ethos, these artists span the world in their origin and also in their oeuvres.

For South Asian origin artists, Maha Ahmed and Anoushka Mirchandani, feelings of isolation, of assimilation and the role of the external environment comes to the canvas, but in disparate ways. While for Ahmed, imaginary worlds are created with mythical, fantastical creatures, Mirchandani’s practice of self-portraiture delves deep into the identity crisis that immigrants face.

Working with pencil, architectural stencils and lithographs Louise Despont’s collages are laborious and highly organized, referencing her interest in spirituality and the symbiotic relationship between man and nature. Spirituality and interconnectedness of all living beings is at the heart of Emilie Pugh’s practice that draws on systems of belief. Using a wide range of mediums and processes, including unconventional method of mark-making, she layers artworks to challenge the static form.

Layering is also a signature of Idris Khan’s meditative works. Printed texts are stamped in densely overlaid geometric shapes on the surface of paintings, works on paper, sculptures and wall drawings. The texts are drawn from the artist’s own writings in response to classic art historical, philosophical and religious tracts.

Blurring the boundary between sculpture and painting are Diana Al Hadid’s works. Cross-referencing cultures, disciplines and ancient civilizations, in the creation of these abstract, three-dimensional panels.

And finally, Annie Morris, will present her towering three ball stack sculpture. These totemic pieces start with a drawing and change dimensionality through plaster, pigment and sand, reflecting Morris’s ability to work across disciplines.
